How Does Trigger Point Acupuncture Work?

Trigger points are focused knots of pain located in tightened muscle tissue. They develop out of acute or repetitive overtraining, musculoskeletal imbalance, injury or other kind of strain. It is one of the safest ways to address physical problems. The treatment usually involves only some short-term muscular soreness caused by the involuntary twitching. An acupuncturist inserts a tiny needle into the muscle and gently manipulates the muscle. The muscle responds with an involuntary twitch. The muscle typically twitches for up to 30 seconds under repeated probing but eventually stops.

After 5-20 probes, the muscle pulsing stops due to exhaustion and the tension it was causing is also greatly diminished. trigger point treatment is very active for a portion of the treatment with the explicit goal of causing muscle twitching in knotty or tight muscles. Later the needles are left in similarly to Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Our Natural Approach

A trigger point session begins with the practitioner examining the joints and musculature of the client in order to identify specific areas of tightness, restriction and pain. The acupuncturist is then able to manipulate the nerves controlling the muscles in the targeted area to cause a light twitching or slight flexion. The intended effect is to allow the muscles to flex and relax slightly and relieve the pressure or tense area. Muscles often work in conjunction with other muscles and the area treated is not always the area where the client experiences the most pain.

The acupuncturist then inserts an ultra-thin, single-use acupuncture needle into the suspect muscle. Gently needle manipulation seeks to produce localized involuntary twitching. This reaction fatigues the tight muscle and produces an immediate reduction or elimination of the tightness.

Trigger point therapy is an alternative therapy, the benefits of which include a focus on detecting and releasing trigger points. Located in the skeletal muscle, trigger points are spots that produce pain when compressed. In many cases, trigger points form as a result of trauma to the muscle fibers.

In alternative medicine, trigger point therapy is used to treat a number of chronic pain conditions, including:

  • Headaches
  • Temporomandibular joint ain
  • Lower back pain

In addition, some people use trigger point therapy as a treatment for osteoarthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, tinnitus, migraines, sciatica, and sports injuries. In some cases, decreased pain and improved mobility is immediate. Typically, it may take a few treatment sessions for a lasting positive effect.
